The Rotary Club of Bangor mourns the loss of Luigi Rossetti, who passed away peacefully at home on 16 February. Luigi was one of life’s great characters with a warm and outgoing personality, and a friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Born near Venice over 92 years ago Luigi pursued higher education before serving in the Italian military after World War II. He then embarked on a distinguished career with the airline business Aer Italia, rising to the position of senior manager and working in many parts of the world.
It was during his time abroad that he met Molly and he always claimed that the first time he set eyes on her she was destined to become his wife – and so it was. Both went on to share a lifetime of adventure, travel and love.and were blessed with three daughters, but tragically, one daughter passed away recently after a short illness, a loss that weighed heavily on both him and Molly.
Upon retirement from the airline business, Luigi and Molly settled in Bangor, where in 1992.he became an esteemed member of the Bangor Rotary Club. He had been a member of Rotary since 1970 when working abroad. His dedication to Rotary was extraordinary, holding an impeccable 100% attendance record and actively participating in the club’s initiatives and fundraising efforts. His enthusiasm and infectious personality made him an integral part of the club, always ready to share a story or a kind word and living out the rotary motto of ‘service above self’.
Beyond Rotary, Luigi had many passions. He was an avid tennis player, braving all kinds of weather to play with friends at his local club. His love of aviation extended beyond his career—by authoring several technical books on aircraft, and sharing his extensive knowledge with others. His linguistic talents were equally remarkable and being fluent in multiple languages, he was often called upon to serve as an interpreter in legal proceedings.
Luigi Rossetti was a man of great intellect, kindness, and generosity, whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and fellow Rotarians, but his legacy of warmth, wisdom, and service will live on.
