Guest speaker at Bangor Rotary Club, Wesley Wilson, Chair of Bangor and North Down Branch of the Samaritans along with the President Gavin Walker.
Bangor Rotary Club members have been told that one in five adults contemplate suicide at some time in their life.
The shocking statistic was revealed by guest speaker Wesley Wilson, Chair on Bangor and North Down Samaritans.
Mr Wilson said the aim of the Samaritans is to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of emotional distress or despair including those that may lead to suicide.
“We also seek to promote a better understanding in society of suicidal behaviour and the value of expressing feelings which may otherwise lead to suicide or impaired emotional health” he said.
Mr Wilson stressed that anyone calling the Samaritans did so in total confidence and he said the public should be aware that the Samaritans now have a new telephone number 116123 which operates throughout the whole of the UK and Ireland.
The Bangor and North Down Branch of the Samaritans was set up in 1973 and since then has had over 1200 volunteers.
