This week Ards and North Down Borough Council welcomed members from Green Spaces, For Another Path, Bangor Rotary and local residents from across Bangor to Kerrs Wood for a fantastic community planting day. Together, we planted 40 light‑standard native trees, including Sessile Oak, Rowan, Hazel and Silver Birch.
This marks the first phase of a wider programme for Kerrs Wood. In total, 100 new native trees will be planted across the site, with the remaining planting by the end of February 2026.
Planting native species directly contributes to the aims of the Council’s Tree & Woodland Strategy 2021–2032, which highlights the importance of trees in improving air quality, storing carbon, and supporting local biodiversity, as well as the need to increase native tree canopy across the Borough
This work also contributes to the wider STAND4TREES initiative, our long‑term programme focused on increasing tree cover and involving communities in meaningful environmental action. To date, over 60,000 trees have already been planted throughout the Borough as part of this initiative, with more community and Council‑led planting still to come. STAND4TREES places strong emphasis on community involvement, with planting events like this central to building local pride and environmental awareness.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us. Your support is helping create a stronger, healthier and more resilient woodland for future generations.
