It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the Rotary Club of Bangor announces the passing of our esteemed long-standing member and Past President, Roy Rosbotham. Roy was a man of immense character, kindness, and dedication, whose presence enriched our club for over four decades.
Roy joined Rotary in 1981, eventually serving as our Club President during the 2000/01 milestone year. However, his service extended far beyond our weekly meetings. To the people of Bangor, Roy was the “friendly chemist in Ballyholme.” For many years, his pharmacy was more than just a business; it was a place of comfort. Roy was highly respected for his expert advice and his genuine care for those seeking help with ailments. His patient, professional manner made him a trusted pillar of the local community.
Roy’s commitment to healthcare and wellbeing was also seen in his leadership as Chair of the Friends of Bangor Hospital. Under his guidance, the group fundraised tirelessly to improve the lives of patients and enhance medical services, leaving a lasting impact on local healthcare that will be felt for years to come.
Outside of his professional life, Roy’s great passion was music. A gifted singer, he shared his talents with The Ards Choral Society, his local church choir and the Belfast Cathedral Choir .Whether in a grand cathedral or his home congregation, Roy’s love for choral music was a testament to his vibrant spirit.
Roy reached his 90th birthday this past February and remained an active, vital part of our club until late 2025. While he continued to serve with distinction, he deeply felt the loss of his beloved wife, Edna, who passed away in October 2021. Edna was a constant support to Roy and a familiar, warm face at many Rotary even
The loss of Roy Rosbotham leaves a void in the Rotary Club of Bangor and the wider community that will not easily be filled. We extend our deepest sympathy to his son Alan, his daughter Barbara, and the entire family circle.
We have lost a true gentleman, a dedicated Rotarian, and a dear friend.
