SUMMARY:Rotary Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Allan Smith speaking on Northern Ireland-born film director Brian Hurst\, Film Director\n(A short biography courtesy of imdb.com) \nHailing from East Belfast\, Northern Ireland\, Hans Moore Hawthorn Hurst was a linen worker before joining the army during World War I. He was a private in the Royal Irish Rifles\, and survived the slaughter at the disastrous Gallipoli landing in Turkey. \nHe changed his name to Brian Desmond Hurst. On his return home he became disturbed by the continuing troubles in Belfast and left for Canada to train as an artist. He became part of the artistic “bohemian” movement and moved in those circles in Paris and New York. He eventually wound up in Hollywood\, where he studied the craft of filmmaking under the tutelage of famed director John Ford. \nThe two became extremely close–Hurst even appeared as an extra in Ford’s Hangman’s House (1928) along with another of Ford’s good friends\, John Wayne–and often referred to each other as “cousin”\, although they were not related by blood\, and remained the best of friends up until Ford’s death in 1973. \nHurst returned to Europe soon afterward\, and made what is generally considered to be Ireland’s first sound film\, Irish Hearts (1934). Two years later he made a film that caused the authorities in his native Northern Ireland to forbid it from being shown there: Ourselves Alone (1936)\, a story of the 1921 Irish rebellion against British rule. \nHurst ran into censorship troubles again with his adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe‘s The Tell-Tale Heart (1934)\, which was banned in many areas of Great Britain for being “too horrible” for public exhibition. These incidents didn’t deter Hurst from making controversial films\, however. He turned out the dark On the Night of the Fire (1939) in 1939\, regarded as one of the first British “noir” films. \nDuring the war Hurst made such films as Dangerous Moonlight (1941)\, a well-regarded story of an American newswoman in England who falls in love with an exiled Polish pianist who wants to return to his country to fight the Nazis (the film also popularized the musical number “Warsaw Concerto”). \nAfter the war he made what he regarded as his favorite film\, Theirs Is the Glory (1946)\, about the disastrous British-American wartime operation at Arnhem in Holland\, which became Britain’s biggest-grossing film for almost a decade. He returned to his Irish roots in two other films\, Hungry Hill (1947) and John Millington Synge‘s The Playboy of the Western World (1962) (which was also his final picture). \nHowever\, the film he is most famous for is Scrooge (1951)\, considered by critics and audiences alike to be the definitive version of Charles Dickens‘ classic novel “A Christmas Carol”. \nAmong his other successes was Malta Story (1953)\, about the defiant resistance of the military and civilian populations on the island of Malta against relentless Nazi bombing during the war\, and Simba (1955)\, about the Mau-Mau rebellion against British colonial rule in Kenya. He retired in 1963 after “Playboy of the Western World”\, and died in London in 1986. \nLunch Fried Haddock and Chips

Everyone is invited.\n\nPlease remember that there will be no club meeting in the Golf Club.

SUMMARY:Rotary Business Meeting - Bangor Golf Club
DESCRIPTION:A thoughtful update on our plans and a discussion on Associate Membership\nPlease note that this meeting will be held at Bangor Golf Club.\nLunch: Sausages\, mash and onion gravy\nInformation on Associate Membership from Rotary Website\nWhat is Associate Membership?\nThe Rotary GB&I Associate Membership Pilot Programme allows an individual to become associated and acquainted with a Rotary Club\, its members\, its programmes and projects and the expectations of club membership with the intent of becoming an active member within a designated period of time.\n\nIs there an established membership approval process to be used by clubs in Rotary GB&I?\nNo\, it is up to each club to decide what this process should be. It is best to develop this process before inviting individuals to join as associate members.\n\nIs this type of membership the same as being ‘A Friend of Rotary’?\nMany clubs do have supporters who are considered Friends of Rotary but no official programme is in place. Many of the friends turn up to support clubs at events rather than have an interest in joining. The Associate Membership pilot is in place to give people the opportunity to experience at first hand the work and fellowship of Rotary without the need to become an active member. It can easily work alongside any programme that a club has with Friends. As a simple comparison a ‘Friend of Rotary’ is more likely to be a valued supporter but is unlikely to become an active member whereas an associate member is a potential active member.\n\nHow does the Rotary club approve prospective members?\nThis is for each club to decide. Processes may vary from club to club but it will be helpful if that process is shown to prospective members. The process can be informal or a more formal ‘Seven day letter’ method.\n\nDoes the associate member have a classification?\nThe classification of the associate member will be established by the club. Because the associate member is not an official member of the Rotary club this classification does not count towards the classification limits set out in Article 8 of The Standard Rotary GB&I Club Constitution.\n\nWhat are the attendance requirements of an associate member?\nIt is for the club to decide the attendance requirements of an associate member as well as what is expected in club-sponsored service projects and club social events. Make-ups should be determined by the club.\n\nAre associate members registered with RI?\nAt present associate members are not listed on the RI database as official members of Rotary. It may be possible to register them on club or district databases depending on which type of database is in use.\n\nDo associate members wear badges?\nYes\, if the club wishes this. It is up to the club to consider what references should be on the badge in line with the club traditions. Some Rotary suppliers have associate member badges available.\n\nDo associate members have a vote on club matters?\nFor the purpose of general meetings it is up to the club to decide whether an associate member may vote on club matters. Because associate members are not official members of Rotary International they cannot take part in RI or Rotary GB&I voting. Districts have the right to decide whether they will accept an associate member as a voting member of a club.\n\nCan an associate member hold office in the Rotary club?\nAssociate members are not entitled to hold any club officer position but they are encouraged to work with club committees.\n\nWhat are the fees for an associate member?\nThere are no RI or Rotary GB&I dues for an associate member. Districts may decide if they wish to charge a fee. Clubs may also decide if they want to charge a fee. It is acceptable that fees vary from club to club as they do with active members.\n\nWill an associate member have to pay the Rotary GB&I affiliation fee?\nNo. Associate members are not official members and do not pay the affiliation fee.\n\nCan an associate member convert to active membership?\nYes\, this can be done at any time and the club should determine a process of how this can be achieved and record this. This will take into consideration the way in which the associate member was introduced to the club in the first place. For example\, if the club used the ‘seven day letter’ process it may not wish to go through the full process again. On conversion to active membership an affiliation fee is payable to Rotary GB&I as with all new active members. This is £15 in 2015-2016.\nCan an active member of the club convert his/her membership to associate?\nNo. This pilot is about ways in which new members may be introduced to Rotary. Under the pilot it is not permissible to convert from active to associate.\n\nIs there a process for terminating the membership of an associate member?\nThe club should consider a process for terminating membership. Article 12 of The Standard Rotary GB&I Club Constitution may be helpful.\n\nIs there a designated time for an individual to be an associate member?\nIt is for clubs to decide. However\, the purpose of this pilot is to encourage new active membership so clubs may wish to consider how long active membership should continue to maintain this goal. Six months to two years is a suggested guide.\n\nIt seems that clubs can make a number of decisions about the processes they use with regard to associate members. Surely\, it would be better if Rotary GB&I agreed upon these processes?\nWe are still at the stage of piloting these processes within Rotary GB&I. In due course\, an evaluation will be carried out and good practices from that may be spread to clubs.\nDo clubs need to record the way in which they are introducing pilots for their own purposes?\nThere is no instruction to do this. However\, for clarity and so that all understand the way a pilot is conducted clubs may wish to consider adding short Standing Orders to their Club Constitution.
